What makes jewellery beautiful? Jewellery that transports you beyond the realms of the everyday.
Even as a young girl I understood how objects of beauty can trigger a sense of joy, a feeling like something extraordinary could happen. Playing dress-up with my grandmother Doris’ jewellery gave me that feeling. My favourite style was a turquoise and gold cocktail ring that once belonged to a titled lady. When I wore this ring, I felt transformed - I was an elegant, sophisticated grown-up.
I learnt about fine jewellery and art at an early age. Doris would take me to art galleries and auction houses. Webb’s Auction House in Auckland was my favourite. Doris had an exceptional eye for rare and exquisite pieces, and she passed on her knowledge to me. It was during this time my fascination with precious coloured gemstones began.
In my adult years, my love affair with the cultural landscape of India developed with frequent visits to this vast sub-continent. I am obsessed with India’s architectural history. Centuries old forts and majestic palaces support my design curiosity. My husband and co-founder of Aubrey found growing up in Kolkata offered a unique opportunity to witness the cultural mix of Eastern and Western influences. This in turn has shaped our company vision.
